How China Works

Unfiltered information on the world’s next superpower

As a Chinese native raised in the U.S., I was fortunate to have the opportunity to experience and observe the both sides extensively. I have spent a great deal of time studying and reading on the many forms of political systems we have today in the last few years. Here I plan to start a series sharing what I have learned and have deduced in an unfilter, unbiased and uncensored perspective on China, and how China works.

Many of us today fall victim to propaganda, and the most important skillset, in my opinion, of the 21st century is to detect BS and not fall for it. The ability to collect factual information has also become challenging because every other post or internet user you come across today is there with an agenda.

I will present to you only the factual information, while sourcing publicly accessible data that’s trustworthy, using the simpliest languages, not trying to make any case of right or wrong (binary perspectives are not worthy of debates here). I will leave it up to you to make your own conclusions.

My short term plans are to cover the following topics:

  1. China’s meritocratic political system and how it selects its leaders in different levels of the government.
  2. China’s 5000 years of history in a nutshell (and why they are significant to today’s China and to the world)
  3. China’s society and challenges its facing
  4. China’s state-owned/market hybrid economy
  5. Mao’s thoughts on China
  6. China’s military weapon capabilities analysis
  7. Thoughts on how the American system can patch and adapt

And on lighter topics such as:

  1. Complete tour guides for major cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen
  2. Best destinations in China for hiking and exploring scenaries
  3. What does an average Chinese person do in a day, covering different occupations from delivery drivers to highschool teachers
  4. Living costs/retirement analysis and how to move to China

There are 2 motivations for me to write here:

  1. China is without a doubt, on its way to become one of, if not the only superpower in the world, whether you like it or not. It would make sense for average individuals around the world to understand China and how it works in depths that’s rarely being explored before. Without distractions of propaganda and subjective narratives.
  2. A way for me to keep notes on my learnings and develop thoughts through writing, one day I hope to share this collection with my children to help them understand the world better.

My next article will be on how the Chinese Communist system works and why it’s a highly efficient polity. I will also do a side by side comparison with the democratic system we have in the U.S. today. Remember, this stuff on China is not widely available on the English internet even if you search for it. Because there aren’t that many Chinese Americans fluent in both languages and first hand living experiences, who have the interest in objectively studying different political systems and with an eagerness to share.
